NETWORK Rail plans are on track to test a new type of rail barrier system at two open level crossings in Ardrossan in an attempt to increase safety measures on Scotland's railway lines.
If the trials prove successful the system would then be rolled out to 23 other crossings throughout the nation, predominantly in the Highlands.
The North Ayrshire trials have been earmarked after an 18 month investigation by the rail company revealed the new barriers can be installed at an average cost of £100,000, while the cost of installing an older barrier system would run to more than £500,000.
