Castle in pole position

Magnox North Ayrshire League First Division DARVEL 2 ARDROSSAN CASTLE 4

THIS was a must-win game for the Castle that saw them go top of the Ayrshire 1st Division with a well-deserved three points.

The game started with both teams having to deal with the very poor playing surface and within 30 sec Darvel had a penalty awarded after a challenge from McCann, from which they scored.

A setback for the Castle early on but they rallied and started to play some good football but the conditions were proving difficult with underfoot conditions. The breakthrough came for Castle after a ball from midfield was flicked on by Brookes. A Darvel defender tried to clear but slipped and Donovan took full advantage by stepping past another defender and scoring from an acute angle to make it 1-1.

The second half started well for the castle who found themselves up 2-1. Brookes finished from close range from a corner kick after some very good work from Loudon to win the corner.

The away side continued to play attractive football even though the park was cutting up very badly. McCann released McInnes down the left and when he cut inside, the goalie brought him down with a penalty awarded. McBreen stepped up and made no mistake 3-1 castle. By this time castle were well on top with Brookes and Donovan tormenting the defence after getting on the end of some great through balls from midfield. The fourth came from a corner again with Morrison always a threat knocking a header goal bound And Brookes nipping in to finish it off. 4-1 castle. Darvel managed to get one back late on but the castle held out convincingly to win 4-2. A good start to the New Year for the Castle and man-of the-match award going to James Morrison.
